Tips to Prepare for a Boudoir Shoot

Preparation is key to a successful shoot. But I get it, you’re not sure what to prepare and how to prepare. Well, this blog post will cover all the juicy details so you can enjoy your day to the fullest!

Pay attention to your body

Hydrate your body in the days leading up to your boudoir session by drinking lots of water. Moisturize your body as well. I don’t know about you, but simply putting some lotion on my skin helps me feel a little more put together. If you tend to be a sensitive person when it comes to products on your skin, this is not the time to try a new lotion.

Have clean and dry hair

Washing your hair the night before is fine. You don’t need to curl it or straighten it. If you have oily hair, wash and blow dry your hair the day of the session. Arriving with dry hair is important to the flow of hair and makeup.

Prep your face

You don’t need to arrive with any makeup on – that’s my artist’s job. All you need to do is wash your face the day of your session and put some light moisturizer on if you choose. In the weeks leading up to your boudoir shoot, make sure you have a good skin care routine that you are following regularly to avoid blemishes. Treating yourself to a facial a week before your shoot will help with your makeup application the day of your shoot.

Exfoliating and moisturizing your lips helps tremendously with the makeup process. If exfoliating your lips isn’t in your normal routine, brush you lips with a toothbrush.

If you wax or trim your eyebrows, it’s best to have this done 3 to 4 days prior to your session so they are fresh.

Pay attention to your nails – hands and toes

We’ll be using your hands a lot in your session so pay attention to what’s on your nails. If you want to get a manicure, get one 2 to 3 days before your session. While you’re at it, get those toes done because they will be in your images.

What if I wax?

If you get any area of your body waxed (and I mean ANY – wink, wink), get it done a few days before your shoot to allow the redness to go away.

Eat a good breakfast

Modeling is hard work and I can’t have hangry clients. Make sure you eat a decent breakfast the day of your shoot. I get that you don’t want to feel bloated, so pick your breakfast wisely.

Pack the night before

Pack all of your outfits and accessories the night before. You will have plenty on your mind the morning of your shoot and the last thing you want to do is arrive at the studio and realize you forgot something. If you are in doubt whether to bring something, bring it. I always tell my clients it’s better to bring it and not use it versus wishing you brought it.

Leave your nerves behind

When you walk out the door of your house, leave your nerves behind. So many of my clients come to me nervous. My clients say I do a great job of easing their nerves, but if you simply check them at the door of your house knowing that you are going to have a fabulous day, it makes for a much more relaxed drive to the studio.

So there you have it! Follow these tips to make the most of your boudoir experience. I do all I can to prepare my clients. In the weeks leading up to their shoot, I am in constant contact with them to make sure they aren’t feeling overwhelmed and feel completely prepared for their day of awesomeness!

Read what this client had to say about her experience:

“Hands down one of the best experiences I have ever had! I had wanted to do a boudoir shoot for several years and finally decided to go for it! Karen was so fast to respond to my initial inquiry and had answered all of my questions before I even had a chance to ask them! She kept in touch with me up to the shoot date, sent a guide with information and ideas for outfits, reviewed my outfits prior to make sure I had a nice selection and made the entire process so comfortable and enjoyable! We talked and laughed during my session….. and the photos!!!! I can’t believe that was me! Would definitely recommend and would totally do it again!”
